COURSE DESCRIPTION: This comprehensive two day, 16 hour course will develop the students as in-house agency instructors in the use of 12-gauge kinetic energy impact munitions and their delivery systems. Topics of instruction include less lethal philosophy, de-escalation tactics, legal aspects of less lethal application, management of officer jeopardy, instructor development, use of force and liability issues, tactical considerations and the potential for death or injury, deployment procedures, suggested less lethal policy concerns, medical issues and proper documentation.
METHODS OF EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated by taking a written test, passing a qualification course and participation in realistic scenario-based training practical exercises.
Required Equipment & Ammunition:
- 12-gauge smooth bore delivery system.
- Simunitions 12-gauge conversion training kits in 9mm or .38cal. and 25rds of simunition training ammo for whichever caliber system you have. (if your department has one – please bring it).
- Converted pistol / rifle with 25rds of Simunitions, UTM or Force on Force ammunition for whichever system you have. Students will participate in realistic force-on-force training scenarios. ITOA has a limited supply of these items and can provide them to those that do not have their own.
- 25 Rounds 12-gauge Bird Shot or Buck Shot Ammunition
- 20 Rounds 12-gauge kinetic energy impact munitions (e.g., bean bag rounds).
- Patrol Duty gear, ballistic vest
- Eye Protection (wrap around/shooting), Hearing protection
- Writing Material
COURSE PREREQUISITES: Certified Police Officer with a knowledge of basic patrol tactics and proficient with the 12-gauge delivery system. This IS NOT a basic 12-gauge operational course – attendees must be proficient in deploying / utilizing the 12-gauge shotguns weapon system. Experienced firearms and / or tactics instructors preferred.

Current ITOA Member = $350.00
Non-Member = $390 (must select the non-member option at registration; includes your one-year ITOA membership)
